Artist Information : Alan Revill

Category : Printmaking
Preferred age groups : Primary and Adult
Maximum group size : 30
Workshop Proposals : Printing: first steps and onward:
Discovering what a print is, how it differs from other kinds of mark-making, and what makes it unique and important. Exploring simple techniques and effects using, in the first instance, fingers, found objects, card and cloth in imaginative ways which break away from the norm. Progressing to making own blocks from different materials by both assembling and incising. Depending on the time available, we can move through a variety of techniques, with and without rollers, to produce a large number of striking images, though at all times emphasis is on quality rather than quantity, and exploring one idea to the full before moving on to a development. Children are shown how to organise and handle the materials correctly so that any mess is kept to minimum and a routine is established. Printing can be used to address any theme you wish.

Learning outcomes:
Understanding of the meaning and importance of printing and the part it plays in our culture and history.
Understanding of materials and equipment, correct handling, organisational skills.
Developing an understanding of different techniques and the effects that can be achieved by using them.
Understanding that ‘less is more’ in many cases, and that prints cannot be modified as a painting can.

If you were looking for an additional artist on the same day, then you might wish to consider our artist Jane Bower, who Alan often works closely with. She is also an AiS member and you can find her profile listed on this site.
